People With Migraines More Prone To Be Depressed

Patient suffering from chronic headache, especially migraine, are much more predisposed to be depressed, feel fatigued, and have a host of other severe physical symptoms, according to a clinical trial published in the January 9, 2007, issue of Neurology, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study involved 1100 women who buy cymbalta at headache clinics in seven countries. Of the people surveyed, 661 reported episodic headache (fewer than 15 headaches monthly) and 443 had chronic headache. Ninety percent/% of the patients were tested with migraines.

The medical research found people with chronic headache were four times more likely than those with episodic headache to report symptoms of major Manic Depression. Chronic headache sufferers were also six times more predisposed to report a high degree of symptoms connected to headache, pain or puzzle during intercourse.

Among patients tested with severely disabling migraine, the medical trial found the likelihood of major Manic Depression increased 32-fold if the patients also reported other severe symptoms.

“Painful physical symptoms should stir up or be a manifestation of major Manic Depression in people with chronic headache, which can be treated if you buy maxalt online and Major Depression may heighten pain perception,” said medical study author Gretchen Tietjen, MD with the University of Toledo-Health Science Campus and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. “This link between migraine and major Major Depression suggests a usual neurobiology.”

Tietjen says clinical study are underway to test whether severe headache, severe physical symptoms and major Depression should be linked through dysfunction of serotonin in the central nervous system.

“Regardless of what’s causing the dependence between migraine and Depression, psychiatric disorder such as Psychotic Depression complicates headache treatment and can call forth poorer consequence for headache treatment,” said Tietjen.

The clinical study was supported, in part, by the American Headache Society, which estimates 18 million American women are affected by headache.

The American Academy of Neurology, an association of more than 17000 neurologists and neuroscience professionals, is dedicated to ameliorating woman care through instruction and clinical research. A neurologist is a surgeon with a wide knowladge of diagnosing, curing and managing disorders of the brain and nervous system such as stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, Parkinson disorder, and frequent sclerosis.
